Sara’s Story

Physical and emotional abuse

This story highlights the transformative power of a safe and supportive environment for survivors of domestic abuse, specifically addressing the pervasive impact of physical and emotional abuse. Sara (name changed), a 30-year-old Indian woman, arrived at Valley House after enduring years of both physical and emotional abuse from her husband.

Sara’s ordeal began in India, where, after marriage, she lived with her in-laws. She was subjected to relentless emotional abuse, treated as a servant expected to perform endless household chores rather than as a wife. This pattern of emotional abuse, coupled with the underlying threat of physical violence, continued after the family relocated to the UK. Despite her dreams of education and a career, her husband exerted control through both physical and emotional means, stifling her ambitions by restricting her movement and finances.

The years of combined physical and emotional abuse culminated in a terrifying incident. Sara was not only physically assaulted but also forced to record a false confession, a clear example of the intertwined nature of the abuse she suffered. Fearful for her safety and recognizing the escalating danger of the physical and emotional abuse, she fled the house and sought refuge at Valley House.

Valley House provided a safe haven, a place where the constant threat of both physical and emotional harm was removed. Staff offered crucial emotional support, ensured her physical safety, and helped her navigate the complexities of immigration and legal proceedings, all while understanding the deep scars left by the physical and emotional abuse.

Valley House offered a holistic approach to healing, addressing both the physical and emotional trauma Sara had experienced:

  • Safety Planning: Staff helped Sara develop safety plans and risk assessments to protect herself from further physical and emotional abuse.
  • Support Plan: A tailored support plan addressed her immigration needs, child contact, and domestic abuse recovery, acknowledging the interconnectedness of these issues with her experience of physical and emotional abuse.
  • Domestic Abuse Awareness: Sara participated in a culturally appropriate domestic abuse support group, gaining knowledge and coping mechanisms to deal with the long-term effects of the physical and emotional abuse.
  • Building Confidence: Surrounded by women from her BAME community, Sara found her voice and built supportive relationships, beginning to heal from the emotional abuse and regain her sense of self.
  • Legal Advocacy: Valley House connected Sara with legal services to address immigration, divorce, and child contact issues, recognizing the legal ramifications of the physical and emotional abuse she had endured.
  • Financial Support: Staff assisted Sara in securing benefits and managing her finances, crucial steps towards independence after financial control had been used as a tool of abuse.
  • Mental Health Support: Sara received medical attention for anxiety and depression caused by the years of physical and emotional abuse.
  • Social Connection: Valley House fostered a sense of belonging through cultural groups and activities, helping Sara rebuild her life after the isolation imposed by her abuser.
  • Education and Training: Sara enrolled in English and Math classes to pursue her educational goals, a step towards reclaiming her future after her ambitions were suppressed.

Sara’s immigration status presented challenges in securing long-term housing. Valley House persevered, securing temporary funding from various organizations to keep her safe while she pursued legal solutions, demonstrating their commitment to her well-being.

Despite the obstacles, Sara has grown tremendously. She is no longer the frightened woman who arrived at Valley House, a victim of physical and emotional abuse. Today, she is confident, pursuing her education, and determined to rebuild her life. While the journey for child contact continues, her spirit is unbroken.

Sara’s story exemplifies the vital role of safe havens like Valley House. By providing comprehensive support, these services empower survivors of domestic abuse, helping them heal from both the physical and emotional scars of abuse, reclaim their lives, and build a brighter future.
