Maya was referred to the counselling service by Kairos, presenting herself with diagnoses of depression and anxiety, compounded by physical health issues and personal debts. Her past included abusive relationships, and she had been struggling to help her son overcome drug addiction. This situation placed immense pressure on their relationship, marked by his stealing money from her or borrowing it without repayment. The resulting arguments led to a cycle of Maya asking him to leave, pleading with him to give up drugs, booking him into rehab, only for him to return, promising he had changed. The recent loss of her mother exacerbated her low mood and sapped her motivation for self-care. Over the past years, Maya felt an increasing lack of confidence and worthlessness, even experiencing suicidal thoughts.
Due to a deep-seated lack of trust, Maya was initially reluctant to engage with the Valley House counselling service. However, once she began, she steadily showed progress and began to appreciate having a safe space to talk about her current and past challenges. Maya found her weekly counselling service sessions beneficial and helpful.
The Valley House counselling service has supported Maya in regaining a sense of control over her life. A significant step was her son moving out, and this time, she has not allowed him to return. With the support of the counselling service, Maya has sought help for her debts, and her finances are now in order. She is now more motivated to care for herself. After periods of isolation, she is spending time with family.
